Roatán weather and the best time to visit

Roatán weather is warm all year, with daytime highs of 79–84 °F (26–29 °C) and a sea that never drops below about 81 °F (27 °C). What changes is the rain: March to May is the driest stretch, October to December the wettest. This guide explains the seasons month by month, with December, January and February in detail, the hurricane risk, cruise and holiday crowds, and when to come for beaches, diving or a cruise stop.

Roatán weather at a glance

Roatán sits in the western Caribbean, roughly 30–40 miles off the north coast of Honduras, so it has a tropical climate with little difference between seasons in temperature. Average highs on the west end of the island range from 79 °F (26 °C) in January and February to 84 °F (29 °C) from June to October, and nights rarely drop below 77 °F (25 °C). Humidity is high all year, but the trade winds blowing from the east usually keep the coast comfortable.

The table on this page shows monthly averages for West Bay from the ERA5 climate reanalysis for 2015–2024. They describe a typical month, not a forecast: a single October can be dry for days, and a dry-season week can still bring a passing shower. Highs and lows are similar all over the island, which is under 50 miles long, though the hilly interior and the more exposed north shore can feel windier.

Dry season and rainy season month by month

The driest stretch runs from March to May, with only about 1–2.5 in (30–65 mm) of rain a month, calm seas on most days and plenty of sunshine. February is also mostly dry. June and July bring a little more rain, around 2.8 in (70 mm) a month, usually as short afternoon showers, and the sea is at its warmest.

Rain builds through August and September and then jumps: October and November are the wettest months, with roughly 13 in (335–340 mm) each, and December still averages around 9.5 in (245 mm). January eases to about 6 in (150 mm). In these months, cold fronts from North America (known locally as nortes) can bring several gray, windy days in a row, rougher water on the north side and cooler evenings, followed by clear spells. Showers rarely last all day, but plan beach days and boat trips with some flexibility.

Sand flies are worst on calm, humid days, especially at dawn and dusk on beaches with little breeze. Insect repellent and sitting in the wind help; our guide to Roatán's beaches notes which spots tend to be breezier.

Roatán weather in December

December is still part of the rainy season, but it is drier than October and November: West Bay averages about 9.5 in (245 mm) of rain, highs of 81 °F (27 °C), nights around 77 °F (25 °C) and a sea of about 82 °F (28 °C). The Atlantic hurricane season ends on November 30, so tropical storms are rare by now, but cold fronts from North America, the nortes, can bring several gray, windy days in a row, choppy water on the north shore and cancelled boat trips, followed by clear, breezy spells.

It is also the busiest month for cruise ships. The 2026-2027 schedule listed on CruiseMapper, a third-party schedule site, shows 76 calls in December 2026, with five ships on December 23, 24 and 30 and none listed for Christmas Day; our Roatán cruise ship schedule explains how to check your date. Hondurans from the mainland and North American winter visitors also arrive for the holidays, so book flights, rooms and ferries early, plan beach time for the mornings and keep a spare day for boat trips in case a front comes through.

Roatán weather in January

January is the coolest month of the year, which on Roatán still means highs around 79 °F (26 °C), nights near 77 °F (25 °C) and a sea of about 81 °F (27 °C). Rain eases to about 6 in (150 mm), roughly 40% less than in December. Cold fronts still arrive every so often, bringing a cooler, windy day or two and rough water on the north side, while the sheltered west and south coasts usually stay calm enough for diving and snorkeling; many divers add a thin wetsuit this month.

January is high season for winter visitors and cruise passengers. The same schedule lists 70 calls for January 2027, with six ships on January 6 and five on January 13 and 20, all Wednesdays, and no ships on New Year's Day. Rooms cost more and popular tours fill up on multi-ship days, so book ahead and keep West Bay for the quieter weekends or for early and late in the day.

Roatán weather in February

February is when the dry season begins, and it is one of the better months to visit Roatán: rain drops to about 3.5 in (90 mm), well under half of December's total, highs stay around 79 °F (26 °C), nights near 77 °F (25 °C) and the sea is about 81 °F (27 °C), the coolest of the year along with January. The cold-front season in Honduras often runs into February and sometimes March, so a windy day is still possible, but most days are good for the beach and the reef.

Cruise traffic stays high, with 61 calls listed for February 2027 and six ships on February 17. It is still high season for winter visitors, so book rooms and popular tours early. February suits travelers who want drier weather than in December and January without the Semana Santa crowds, which in 2027 fall in the last week of March.

Sea temperature and the best months for diving

The water is warm enough for swimming every month: about 81 °F (27 °C) in January and February, rising to 84 °F (29 °C) from May to July and 86 °F (30 °C) from August to October. Most snorkelers need no wetsuit, while divers usually wear a thin 3 mm suit or a rash vest on repeat dives.

Diving on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is good year-round, and the sheltered west and south sides of the island stay divable most days even in winter. Visibility and surface conditions are usually best in the calmer months from about March to September; after a norther, the north shore can be stirred up for a day or two. See snorkeling and diving in Roatán for trips and operators.

Whale sharks are mainly a reason to visit Utila, the neighboring island, where they are seen in many months of the year. Encounters are never guaranteed, and the season descriptions published by local operators vary, so treat any "peak month" as a better chance rather than a promise.

Hurricane season: what the risk really is

The Atlantic hurricane season officially runs from June 1 to November 30, and Roatán lies within the area storms can reach. Direct hits are rare, but they do happen: Hurricane Mitch stalled over the Bay Islands in 1998 and devastated Guanaja, and in November 2024 Tropical Storm Sara stalled off the north coast of Honduras and passed close to Roatán, bringing heavy rain and flooding to the region.

In practice, the main effect of a storm in the area is usually several days of rain and rough seas, cancelled boat trips and ferries, and cruise ships skipping the port or changing their schedule. If you travel between August and November, buy travel insurance that covers weather disruption, book refundable tours where possible, and follow the US National Hurricane Center (nhc.noaa.gov) and Honduras's civil protection agency, COPECO, in the days before you go.

Cruise season, Easter and other busy times

Cruise ships call all year, but the high season runs roughly from October to May, when several ships can be in port on the same day at Carnival's Isla Tropicale (formerly Mahogany Bay) and the Town Center terminal in Coxen Hole. On those days West Bay beach and the most popular excursions get crowded between mid-morning and mid-afternoon; if you are staying on the island, plan beach time early or late. Our Roatán cruise port guide explains both terminals.

Honduras's biggest holiday is Semana Santa, the week before Easter (March 21–28 in 2027). Hondurans from the mainland fill the Bay Islands, ferries add sailings, hotels sell out and West End gets lively, so book early. Christmas and New Year are also busy, with both cruise and holiday visitors; our guide to Christmas in Honduras explains what is open and how the island celebrates. September and early October, before the cruise season builds, are the quietest and often the cheapest months, but they bring the highest storm risk.

Best time to visit Roatán

For the most reliable sunshine and calm water, March to May is the best time to visit Roatán, with April and May the driest months; avoid Easter week if you want lower prices. February and June to August are good alternatives, with mostly short showers. October to December is the low point for weather, with the heaviest rain and the main hurricane risk in October and November, though the island rarely gets the kind of rain that ruins a whole week.

If you are coming on a cruise, you cannot choose the weather, but a morning start helps: showers are often in the afternoon. Check the forecast the day before and keep a backup plan, such as a covered zipline or chocolate and rum factory tour, if rain is likely. For where to base yourself, see where to stay in Roatán.
