Places to visit in Roatán

Beyond the beaches, the places to visit in Roatán fall into two groups for sightseeing: private islands and parks you can reach in minutes from the cruise ports, and neighboring islands that need a boat and most of a day. This page introduces each one and links to its full guide.

Places to visit in Roatán: private islands and parks

Little French Key is a family-run private island off French Harbour with beaches, water sports, lunch packages and an animal area; its drivers pick up at both cruise terminals. Maya Key, in the harbor of Coxen Hole, is a quieter island with a pool, replicas of the Copán ruins and a rescue center for Honduran wildlife, just a few minutes by boat from the Town Center pier.

On the main island, Gumbalimba Park near West Bay combines botanical gardens, a pirate-themed cave, animals and a zipline. All three fit easily into a cruise day; at places with animals, we recommend watching rather than holding them.

Day trips to the neighboring islands

Utila, the smallest of the main Bay Islands, is known for dive courses and whale sharks. The scheduled ferry from Roatán only allows overnight visits, so a same-day trip needs a private boat of about an hour each way.

Cayos Cochinos, a protected archipelago between Roatán and the mainland, is reached on full-day boat trips that combine snorkeling with lunch in the Garifuna village of Chachahuate. Both depend on calm seas, so they suit people staying on Roatán better than cruise passengers.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best place to visit in Roatán on a cruise day?

Places close to the ports work best: Maya Key is a few minutes by boat from the Town Center pier, Little French Key's packages include transfers from both terminals, and Gumbalimba Park is in the West Bay area at the island's western end.

Can you visit Utila or Cayos Cochinos from Roatán in one day?

Yes, but only on a private boat or organized day trip of about an hour each way, and only when the sea is calm. The Utila ferry schedule requires an overnight stay.

Are Little French Key and Maya Key worth it?

They suit travelers who want a beach, lunch and activities in one place with little planning. If you only want a beach, a public one such as West Bay costs less.
