Roatán excursions and tours

Roatán excursions fall into a handful of types: the reef, the wildlife parks, the adventure tours in the hills and the boats to the cays. This page introduces each one and explains how to choose a tour that fits a cruise day, so you are back at the pier with time to spare.

Types of tours in Roatán

On the reef: boat snorkeling trips, beach snorkeling at West Bay, discover-scuba sessions and certified dives. See snorkeling and diving tours.

Wildlife: short visits to parks and rescue centers with sloths, capuchin monkeys, macaws and iguanas, often combined with a beach break. Since 2025 visitors may no longer hold sloths or monkeys, only watch them up close; see sloth, monkey and wildlife tours.

Adventure: canopy ziplines, ATV and buggy rides, plus tastings at the island's chocolate and rum factories. See zipline, ATV and adventure tours.

On the water: catamaran sails, glass-bottom boats, sunset cruises and sport fishing. See boat trips and fishing.

Cays and island day trips

Two private cays off the south coast sell day passes and packages: Little French Key, with beaches and a restaurant near French Harbour, and Maya Key, with a beach, pool and animal rescue center. Further afield, Utila, about an hour away by ferry, and the protected Cayos Cochinos, reached on full-day boat trips, suit travelers staying on the island better than a short port call.

Choosing Roatán cruise excursions

Check the ship's hours ashore first, and remember that Roatán keeps Central Standard Time all year, which may differ from ship's time. Pick a tour that ends at least an hour before all-aboard and that picks you up at your own terminal: Roatán Town Center in Coxen Hole and Mahogany Bay are about 3 miles apart, and our cruise port guide explains the transfer times.

Ships wait for tours sold by the cruise line, not for independent ones. Independent tours are often cheaper and smaller; choose operators with many recent reviews, a written return-to-ship policy and free cancellation if the ship skips the port in bad weather.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best excursions in Roatán?

Snorkeling the reef is the classic choice, followed by sloth and monkey parks, ziplines and a beach afternoon at West Bay. Many tours combine two of these in four to six hours.

Is it better to book Roatán excursions through the cruise line?

Cruise-line tours cost more, but the ship waits if they run late. Independent tours are usually cheaper and smaller; book one with a return-to-ship guarantee and terminal pickup.

Can you visit Utila on a cruise day?

It is rarely practical. The public ferry takes about an hour each way and its timetable does not allow a same-day return from Roatán, so Utila is best visited with at least one night.
